Memorial Healthcare System Improves Stroke and STEMI Case Times With New Technology
HOLLYWOOD, FL: Memorial Healthcare System has implemented a mobile application to simplify care coordination and improve outcomes for emergency patients at Memorial Regional Hospital’s Comprehensive Stroke Center in Hollywood, FL
When it comes to emergency conditions such as STEMI or stroke, time is a critical factor in determining patient outcome. Unfortunately, even the most advanced treatment centers experience delays when providing care as a result of outdated processes and archaic technologies that waste time and create chaos.
In efforts to combat these delays and provide better quality of life for their patients, Memorial Regional Hospital has implemented a mobile platform called Pulsara, that connects all members of acute care teams, allowing them to respond faster and have access to more information in time-sensitive emergencies.
“When it comes to treating stroke, ‘time is brain,’” says Brijesh P. Mehta, MD, Medical Director of Stroke and Neurocritical Care at Memorial Healthcare System’s Neuroscience Institute. “Coupling Pulsara with our multidisciplinary stroke team and the parallel workflow makes Memorial Regional Hospital among the most innovative stroke centers in the country – treating some of highest volumes of patients, by optimizing all of the critical components to rapidly adminster life-saving treatment, aimed at continually improving clinical outcomes.”
EMS in the area also uses Pulsara to securely connect their medics to nearby hospitals. Putting this instant communication ability in first responders’ hands allows for increased transparency of the patient’s condition and helps to further speed up the care process. For example, EMTs can instantly transmit to the hospital an emergent patient’s name and age, vital signs, distance and ETA and even a secure picture of the ECG or facial droop. Because no information is stored on the device, it is HIPAA compliant and secure.
In addition, the app coordinates care for patients already admitted to the hospital, as well as those being transferred between hospitals. “We are excited to finally have a single, unified pre-hospital, in-patient, and inter-facility solution for the care teams that work so hard for their patients,” said James Woodson, an emergency room physician and founder of Pulsara, “Communications within hospitals used to be so bad that if you were already in the hospital and had a stroke or STEMI, you were better off walking out into the parking lot and calling 911 from there. Pulsara provides a single, clear-cut solution to all communication needs regardless of patient location.”
