Hospital, Tech Company, or Other - Why Contracts are a Crucial First Step

By Team Pulsara on May 03, 2016

“Good fences make good neighbors” is a phrase that applicable in so many situations - even in drawing up business contracts.  Before you build that business (be it a tech company like Pulsara, a hospital, or even a bakery), you MUST go ahead and build a strong foundation and a good fence so everybody knows the agreed upon boundaries should a dispute arise.

Everyone Wants Cake on Their Birthday!

The importance of maintaining company culture, teamwork & recognition in a telecommuting, multi-state company.

As a Human Resources professional, I constantly have company culture and employee engagement in the forefront of my brain. Are we doing enough to make sure our employees love working here? Do they feel engaged and included in the team?

In a more traditional business setup with brick and mortar locations and employees working 8:00a-5:00pm in office, it is often easier to gauge these crucial metrics as the ability to physically get ‘a feel’ for the energy is possible in such a setting. And though perhaps a bit more effortful, in a company with several remote employees across many states, it is still very possible to not only maintain, but also foster a strong company culture full of employees that truly feel like part of the team.

Always Wear Pants (and Other Tips for Working Remotely)

By Team Pulsara on Feb 16, 2016

EDITOR'S NOTE: Special thanks to Brian Maher for writing today's blog post. You can connect with him on LinkedIn.

Working from home is a luxury that has been increasingly afforded to many of us in the tech industry (and a growing number of other industries too). About 6 months ago, I was given the opportunity to join the millions of Americans who already work remotely full time...only my switch to a remote workplace was going to be a bit more involved than for most.

I wouldn’t just be working remotely in another city, or office, but instead in another country, in another timezone, with literally no possibility of coming in to the office if I needed to. The extreme nature of my work-from-home setup left me feeling anxious about the experience, so  I read various blogs in efforts to make the move a positive learning experience for myself and a productive one for my employers.

Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs. --- Henry Ford

No matter who you are, what your personality type is, or what kind of work you do, from time to time it is inevitable that you will say to yourself:

“How on earth am I going to ever accomplish this?”

“Where do I begin?”

“There’s no way!...”

I can sure relate to these expressions in my life experiences. As a student athlete in college, those 18-hour days that started with a 5am morning workout and ended doing calculus problems into the evening were daunting. I eventually learned not to focus on the GPA I had to reach to maintain my scholarship, but rather on doing well on the exams, projects, and papers along the way each semester.

How Multitasking Affects Productivity and Your Brain (Hint...it's Not Good!)

By Team Pulsara on Dec 15, 2015

EDITOR'S NOTE: Special thanks to Kathy Walsh for writing today's blog post. You can connect with her on LinkedIn.

So you think multitasking makes you more efficient at home and at work? Not so much...

My husband was the one who pointed it out the other morning ... I was on the verge of becoming “that guy.” You know, the person who keeps glancing at their smartphone or emails during the team meeting and later doesn’t follow through, provide support, or remember the group decision and next steps because they weren’t really mentally engaged?

Or that friend you meet for lunch who has their smartphone on the table and alternates between instant messaging the kids, posting pictures of your meal to Facebook, and looking at the restaurant reviews on Yelp while you are “chatting?"

Or the person driving ahead of you who is swerving, changing speeds, and running red lights while talking (or, **GASP** texting) on her cell phone?

Oh sure, my multitasking seemed innocent enough. I was simply checking my cell phone for work emails and responding WHILE reading the morning paper, WHILE watching the 6:00 am news, WHILE eating breakfast, WHILE my husband was asking about the day’s plans.

Understanding Disruptive Innovation

By Team Pulsara on Nov 24, 2015

EDITOR'S NOTE: Special thanks to Tia Smith for writing today's blog post. You can connect with her on LinkedIn.

The widespread adoption of the term “disruption” to describe any force that shakes up an industry has created a particular kind of faux pas in the business world, where business leaders often default to using it for a much wider spread of changes than the technical definition actually implies.

Let’s take a closer look at why disruption is misused to describe a cascade of events, rather than its intended use: to describe the technical strategy behind a company’s actions.

Pulsara Chosen Among Top Innovators to Receive 2015 EMS World Innovation Award [Press Release]

By Team Pulsara on Oct 08, 2015

Pulsara has been awarded the EMS Top Innovation Award, as announced at the September 2015 EMS World Expo in Las Vegas. This award is presented to the most innovative products of the year, as judged by a panel from the EMS World Expo Faculty and EMS World Editorial Advisory Board.

Pulsara is a platform that performs like an app to coordinate and simplify the care process for STEMI and stroke. The Pulsara story starts at a dinner party in late 2011, when a group of dedicated medical professionals who were part of Leading Edge Medical Associates (LEMA) came together to discuss a challenge: “How can we improve patient care in our facilities? How can we help our healthcare system pursue value based healthcare – providing improved quality of care at a lower cost?”

Why the ‘Universal Clock’ is a game changer for EMS

By Team Pulsara on Sep 25, 2015

EDITOR'S NOTE: This article was originally pubilshed on EMS1.com. EMS1 serves as the largest site for paramedics and EMTs to find expert industry-relevant content.

With EMS and hospital professionals looking at different clocks—different timelines—for the same patient, it’s surprising that there aren’t more issues. And that’s not getting into other related information that is transmitted along the line: patient records, ECGs, and other miscellaneous documents. When every second counts, that type of miscommunication can be dangerous, or even fatal.

The future of healthcare is in bridging these gaps and creating a single protocol that encompasses the entire process from first contact to definitive treatment and includes all the stakeholders involved. The idea itself is a simple communication protocol that:

  • can be used regardless of patient location
  • unifies all acute care processes in one common workflow
  • and is available to anyone who has a smart device … i.e. everyone.

Traumatic Brain Injury: 10 Things You Need to Know to Save Lives

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) can cause inflammation and swelling or bleeding from damage to brain tissue and blood vessels. Bleeding may occur within the brain (an intracranial hemorrhage) or the protective layers that surround it, such as an epidural, subdural or subarachnoid hemorrhage.

5 Ways Mobile Healthcare Coordination Can Change EMS

By Team Pulsara on Sep 15, 2015

Medical professionals are always pushing to discover better methods to improve patient outcomes. Nowhere is this more true than in acute care situations, where communication is critical and every second counts.

But up until now, there hasn’t been a great one-size-fits-all solution to the problem of sharing information—benchmark times, patient information, etc.—between emergency response team members, due to great variation from place to place and organization to organization.

One company looked for a way to put a method to the madness. By pulling together people, alerts, and information in a single platform that’s available to everyone, the days of “who knew what when” can be put firmly in the past.

Here’s how Pulsara works, along with five reasons it is quickly becoming the leading technology for improving patient outcomes.

Knock. Knock.

Who’s There?

HIPAA.

HIPAA Who?

I can’t tell you that.

UGGGG. You’ve heard it before.

“Please sign this. It’s for HIPAA.”

OR

“We can’t share that information with you.” “Why not?” “Because … HIPAA!”

Truth is, most people (healthcare folks included) do not have a strong understanding of what HIPAA actually is. In fact, you’ll sometimes even see it spelled incorrectly!

Why Does 911 Send a Fire Truck to a Medical Call?

By Team Pulsara on Aug 06, 2015

EDITOR'S NOTE: Special thanks to Jeffrey Hobson for writing today's blog post. You can connect with him on LinkedIn.

This seems to be one of the most common questions people ask firefighters and paramedics.

Imagine the following scenario:

You call 911 for your neighbor who’s having chest pain. Within a few moments, a big fire engine shows up with your community’s beloved uniformed firefighters. Your friends and fellow neighbors take notice right away and ask, “Why can’t they just send an ambulance? Do they need to waste all that money sending a big truck to a simple medical incident? Can a firefighter really help me right now?”

We care about the latest in stroke research. We care about streamlining and maximizing efficiencies in STEMI cases. We care about building Regional Systems of Care. AND, we care about people.

How does that fit into the big picture?

One of the challenges in any organization is direction. At Pulsara, it’s critically important that we focus on the right core projects at the right time with the right level of concentration. How do we accomplish that? By defining who we are.

Over this 4-part series, we’ll be reviewing our mission, our purpose, our vision and our non-negotiable set of values.
