10 Things to Know to Improve Pediatric Out-Of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Survival in Your Community
By Team Pulsara on Sep 06, 2017
EDITOR'S NOTE: The following content originally appeared on EMS1.com as paid content sponsored by Pulsara. Special thanks to our guest blogger, Peter Antevy, MD.
Follow these 10 steps when treating pediatric cardiac arrest to save lives.
Easy problems have easy answers – complex problems require complex answers. However, in pediatrics, we’ve taken an easy problem and made it unnecessarily complicated. Pediatric resuscitation isn’t that complex (BVM – compressions – Epi), yet over the last 3 decades we’ve been convinced otherwise. Why? Many have focused on one thing – getting the child’s weight. We’ve been convinced that a single tool or widget will get us through a difficult pediatric call. It’s time to change this mentality.

The Food and Drug Administration Changes Course toward Healthcare Communications
By Team Pulsara on Jul 18, 2017
EDITOR'S NOTE: Special thanks to Cynthia Bradford Lencioni for writing today's blog post. You can connect with her on LinkedIn.

In a stunning development leaked this week to the media, a senior Food and Drug Administration source told journalists that the FDA plans to begin regulating as medical devices certain mobile phones, fax machines, pagers, and some models of egg timers used by healthcare providers for communication and care coordination within the next year.
………… Fake News!!
The truth is that over the past 5 years, there has been a deregulatory trend in the US with regard to low-risk healthcare software, and the 21st-Century Cures Act (2016) is the latest in that trend. Specifically, the Cures Act provides that software for healthcare communication and logistics does not meet the FDA’s “medical device” definition, or classification, and is therefore not subject to FDA regulation. The FDA classifications for software as a medical device are based on the intended use of the application and the risk it presents to patient safety.

Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Grapevine Implements Smartphone Technology to Improve Communications for Emergency Conditions [Press Release]
By Team Pulsara on Jun 27, 2017
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The hospital is the first in the Baylor Scott & White Health – North Texas Division to implement the technology.
Bozeman, MT, June 27, 2017 -- Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Grapevine has implemented a new technology called Pulsara to improve the communication technologies and protocols for patients experiencing symptoms of stroke or heart attack.
The Pulsara platform runs as an application on the smartphones of the medics in the field and each member of the care team at the hospital. The app allows paramedics or EMTs in the field who recognize a stroke or STEMI to simply tap a button on their smartphones, which then notifies everyone on the hospital team that an ambulance is on its way with the critical patient. As the paramedic enters more information, such as the patient’s medical history and vital signs, every member of the team is instantly updated.
